Luther Groth, 94, of Decorah, a longtime cattle buyer died Thursday, May 18, 2000 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.
He was born April 12, 1906 in Post Township, Allamakee County, IA to Ernest and Augusta (Kempke) Groth. He attended the Postville High School in Postville, IA. On October 28, 1926 he married Julia Larson in Postville. They moved to the rural Spring Grove area where he farmed and in the 1930’s started buying cattle. He continued to buy cattle until 1991. Julia passed away March 4, 1963. On September 30, 1966 he married Ruth Livingood. She later passed away April 17, 1993. In April 1993 Luther became a resident of the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah and has resided there since.
Luther is survived by three sons Kenneth of Decorah, and Keith (Rita) and Duane (Shirley) both of rural Spring Grove; two daughters Norma (Donald) Halse of Decorah and Ila Barnes of Rochester; two step-sons Rodney (Carolyn) Livingood of Postville, IA and Dale (Liz) Livingood of Oelwein, IA; 20 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; a sister Ruth Archer of Mesa, AZ and several nieces and nephews. Luther was preceded in death by his first wife Julia; his second wife Ruth; four brothers Fred, Art, Harold, and Walter; and one sister Esther.
Funeral services for Mr. Groth were held Monday, May 22, 2000 at the Highland Lutheran Church in rural Spring Grove with the Rev. David Andreae officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel was in charge of arrangements.
