Vernon J. Burke

Vernon Burke, 83, of Rushford, a former electric lineman and retired rural mail carrier and a former city council member and mayor of Rushford, died Monday, May 22, 2000 at Gundersen-Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, following a brief illness.
Born June 23, 1916 in Rushford, he grew up there, graduated from Rushford High School in 1933 and then worked for area farmers. During World War II, he was a medic in the Army and served in Hawaii, the Philippines, Australia and New Guinea. On March 3, 1946, he married Lucille Thompson at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Winona.
Mr. Burke was a lineman for Tri-County Electric for 23 years and then a rural mail carrier until his retirement in 1985. A member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, he was a member of the Vestry and held several church offices. He served many terms on the Rushford City Council, was Rushford mayor from 1972 to 1974, was past commander of the Rushford VFW and American Legion posts and was a charter member of the Legion honor firing squad. He was treasurer of the Rushford Historical Society, a past president of Oak Grove City Cemetery Board and was involved in the renovation of the Rushford depot. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed gardening, traveling and reading, and was interested in school events.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Luanne (Paul) Dvorak and Nancy Snyder, both of Rushford; three sons, Tom (Joyce) of Kennewick, WA, Jim of St. Paul and John of Winona; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Robert (Vesta) of Vienna, VA; and a sister, Lois Larson of Winona. Three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
A memorial service was held for Mr. Burke was held Thursday, May 25, 2000 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rushford with the Rev. Ernest Harrelson officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove City Cemetery in Rushford. Hoff Funeral Homes-Cook Rushford Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
