Howard Masters, 81, of Mabel died Friday, May 19, 20-00 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah, IA.
Howard was born October 25, 1918 in Burr Oak Township, Winneshiek County, IA to Guy and Edna (Morrison) Masters. He attended the Burr Oak Snell Rural School. On January 21, 1939 he married Norma Haugen in Decorah, IA. They farmed in the Burr Oak area until 1952 when they moved to the Harmony area and farmed there for a few years before going to work for Pederson Brothers from 1956 to 1961. In 1961 they moved to Mabel where he worked as a laborer and also at the Fiberite factory in Winona. After his retirement in 1969 he worked with the Greenthumb program at the Mabel-Canton Schools as a custodian until 1979. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his children, crafts, and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Mabel First Lutheran Church.
Howard is survived by his wife Norma of Mabel; three sons Robert (Ruby) of Midland, TX, Gerald (Vivian) of Potosi, WI, and James (Gail) of New Hampton, IA; seven daughters Ardath (Lowell) Johnson of Mabel, Phyllis (Mrs. Thomas) Johnson of Edmond, OK, Jean (Robert) Watson of Redwing, MN, Elaine Hahn of St. Cloud, MN, Marcia (Mike) Goss of St. Cloud, MN, Lynnette (Charlie) Rochford of Oelwein, IA and Rhonda Masters of Hopkins, MN; 20 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law Vyra Masters of Canton. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson Bradley Masters; two brothers Lyle and Victor; and three sisters Vera Hovey, Ethel Mastellar and Nellie Masters.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 23, 20-00 at the Mabel First Lutheran Church in Mabel with the Rev. Lloyd Menke officiating. Burial was in the Mabel Lutheran Cemetery. Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel was in charge of arrangements.
