Spring Valley Three construction workers have volunteered to make repairs to the Masonic Lodge near Spring Valley. Ed Capek of Rochester and two friends have offered to repair the damaged structure at no cost on the condition that they be allowed to camp at the site while doing the repairs. Capek submitted a materials list for $300 and explained to the Fillmore County Board how the work would be carried out.
In a surprise move, the board agreed to the offer. They arranged for Capek to pick up a check for $300 and made arrangements with the Sheriff's office for Capek and friends to camp during a specified period.
When asked by the board to comment on the merits of the offer, County Attorney Matt Opat said, "this would be a nice project to get done. It is unconventional, but why not take a risk."
Wykoff The Wykoff High School class of 1940 held its 60th class reunion at the Holiday Inn South in Rochester on June 6 (the anniversary of D-Day). All the male graduates except one, who was disabled, went into military service during World War II.
There was a very interesting program telling of student's experiences during the war and over the past 60 years was held. Special guest was Mrs. Elda Glady, a former commercial teacher, who is now 97. Out of the 18 graduates, 6 have passed away.
Isinours While many of the county's bridges have been threatened by flooding, the Old Barn resort is busy building one of their own - a movable one at that. Jim Hamann, of Jim's Portable Welding, has been commissioned by the resort to build a movable bridge for their golf course, which will open July 1. Hamann's bridge is built out of a fertilizer spreader frame and comes equipped with flotation tires. The rigid end will be driven across the South Branch of the Root River and allow golfers to cross the river as they play a round of golf. Obviously, the bridge can be removed by driving it out of the river when high water threatens the river valley.Lanesboro The Lanesboro Arts Center Commission will be giving out brochures to residents at Opera on the Farm and at Art in the Park explaining what has been happening with the proposed Lanesboro Art Center. $1 million in bonding for the art center was approved by the state legislature this past session. The commission has received eight applications from architects which will be reviewed by a sub-committee before a final architect is chosen. The commission is looking at two locations, the former River Valley Cheese building on Parkway and next to the Lanesboro School in Sylvan Park where the basketball courts are located. Once the center is built, the city of Lanesboro would own the building.
Peterson Peterson High School will hold an all-school reunion during Gammel Dag Fest, the weekend of June 16, 17, and 18. Registration is at the Rushford-Peterson Middle School on Saturday, June 17 beginning at 10:00 a.m. The last reunion was ten years ago.
Preston Neither rain, nor sleet, nor dark of night... Sharon Schmidt of Spring Valley, a rural postal carrier with the Preston post office, is celebrating her 25th year with the Postal Service. She started out as a clerk in the Wykoff Post Office before coming to Preston. Schmidt, who says she loves her job because of the people she meets, serves Preston Route 2 which takes her to northwest Preston, Forestville and Greenleafton.
