Vernal “Bud” Wolf, age 92, of Minneapolis, formerly of Preston, died Tuesday evening, June 6, 2000 at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Minneapolis.
Bud was born March 28, 1908, in Preston the youngest of five children of Frank B. and Emma Wolf. Most of his life was spent in the Preston area. He attended and graduated from Preston High School in 1929. On January 5, 1942, he enlisted in the US Navy, being discharged on October 15, 1945. During the intervening years he served in three separate arenas of World War II. He was on the destroyer U.S.S. Tuscaloosa escorting materials to Murmansk, Russia, through the North Sea and on the U.S.S. Tuna at the landing of troops at Casablanca, Morocco, during the invasion of Africa. After attending Submarine school in New London, CT, he served on the Submarine U.S.S. Bonefish in the battle of the China Sea. Upon returning to civilian life, he was a farmer, carpenter, and accomplished wood craftsman. He married Betty Meck on July 3, 1948 and the couple were later divorced. He became a resident of Minnesota Veterans Home in 1995. He was a former member of Christ Lutheran Church in Preston and a former member and commander of the Preston American Legion. He enjoyed attending submarine conventions.
He is survived by one daughter, Wendy Wolf of Faribault, MN; two grandsons, Dana and Derek Wolf of Faribault; his former wife, Betty Wolf of Faribault; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Iva Liddiard and Vera Bergey and two brothers, Ervin and Orval Wolf.
The funeral for Mr. Wolf was held Saturday, June 10, 2000 at the Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston with the Rev. James Rushton officiating. Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery in Preston with military rites by the Preston American Legion and VFW Posts. Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston was in charge of arrangements.
