Irvin Allen, 86, of Mabel, died of a stroke Friday, June 2, 2000 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah.
He was born September 28, 1913, in rural Winneshiek County, IA. He grew up and attended school in the area and married Irma Randall on September 28, 1938, at the Locust, IA, parsonage. The couple farmed for six years before moving to Mabel and buying the Chevrolet and Allis Chalmers dealerships. He later ran the Rushford Salesbarn for two years and then for several years did trucking for Donald Johnson Livestock He then worked as a carpenter for the Hagen Lumber Co. in Mabel until his retirement. He was a member of the Mabel First Lutheran Church, Mabel Sportsman’s Club and formerly of Mabel Fire Department, Lions Club and Mabel City Council. He enjoyed fishing and gardening.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Joyce (LuVerne) Raaen of Mabel and Jean Miller Noltee of Rochester; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Esther Henningsgaard of Hemmet, CA, and Doris Newgard of Mabel, and two brothers, Lester of rural Decorah and Vernon of rural Spring Grove. He was preceded in death by a daughter and a son.
The funeral for Mr. Allen was held Tuesday, June 6, 2000 at Mabel First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Lloyd Menke officiating. Burial was in Hesper Lutheran Cemetery. Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel was in charge of arrangements.
