Hulda Hemker, age 105, of Wykoff, died Tuesday afternoon, June 6, 2000, at the Spring Valley Care Center.
Hulda Sabatke was born May 6, 1895, near Beaver Dam, WI, the daughter of William and Emma (Schwant) Sabatke. She moved with her parents to Minnesota in 1899 and settled in Jordan Township, Fillmore County. She attended public school in Chatfield and one year of normal school in Winona. She taught in rural schools in Fillmore County for five years. She married Martin Hemker September 26, 1917 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wykoff. They farmed for several years in various locations in Minnesota before moving to LaCrosse, in 1950 where she worked in the laundry at Grandview Hospital for eight years. Mr. Hemker died in 1960. She then returned to Wykoff where she spent her remaining years until entering the Spring Valley Care Center in 1988. She was a longtime member of St. John Evangelical Church in Wykoff and was hostess to the Wykoff Senior Citizens for two years.
She is survived by two daughters, Emeline Stender of Wykoff and Irene (Donald) Lambert of Alexandria, MN; four grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and 20 step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, three brothers, and four sisters.
The funeral for Mrs. Hemker was held Thursday, June 8, 2000, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wykoff with Rev. Robert Burmeister officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Thauwald Funeral Home in Spring Valley was in charge of arrangements.
