Howard Gossman

Howard Gossman, 68, a rural Whalan farmer, died Sunday, June 11, 2000 at Rochester Methodist Hospital. He had been ill since May 6.
Born March 3, 1932, in Cresco, IA, he graduated from Canton High School and lived in rural Canton until joining the Army in 1950, serving during the Korean War. He lived in Madras, OR, from 1959 until 1962 and then in Harmony until moving to Whalan in 1962. On October 19, 1958, he married Opal Schrautmier in Bend, OR. Mr. Gossman was a member of American Legion Post 400 of Canton.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Thomas of Whalan, Randy (Lisa) of Canton and Bob (Sheila) of Preston; four daughters, Debra (David) Thompson of Norfolk, VA, Janice Stoneburg of Winona, Connie (Mike) Thedens of Elgin and Kristi (Dan) Ruesink of Cherry Grove; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; six brothers, Wayne (Vivienne) and Merlyn (Vernelle), both of Decorah, IA, Lloyd (Colleen) of Mabel, Harold (Marci) of Tucson, AZ, Carroll (Sharon) of Canton and Roman (Mercedes) of Rose Creek; and three sisters, Jean (Jim) McCabe of Kirksville, MO, Wanda (Ralph) Milligan of Bluffton, IA, and Margo (Bruce) Kroshus of Oronoco. He was preceded in death by two sons, a daughter, a brother-in-law Skip Stoneburg, and two grandsons.
The funeral for Mr. Gossman was held Thursday, June 15, 2000 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Lanesboro, with the Rev. Thomas Loomis officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with military graveside rites by American Legion Post 400. Johnson-Riley Funeral Home in Lanesboro was in charge of arrangements.
