Clifford Merkel, 78, of rural Spring Valley, a longtime area farmer, died Sunday, June 11, 2000 at his home.
Born April 2, 1922, in Rock Township, Mitchell County, IA, he attended New Hampton, IA-area rural schools through the eighth grade. During World War II he served in the Merchant Marine aboard the William S. Halstad, the Charlestown and the Perryville in the Atlantic and Mediterranean-Middle East war zones. He was discharged on August 15, 1945. In 1945, he married Georgie Bly in Spring Valley. Mr. Merkel worked for Woodrich Construction for 20 years, Bly Rendering for three years and farmed in the area for 47 years. He was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Spring Valley, served on its board for many years and served as adult leader for a 4-H club.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Leslie (Jan) of Spring Valley; a daughter, Sandra Williams of Houston, TX; five granddaughters; five brothers, Harvey, Kenneth, Paul and Ray, all of Spring Valley, and Art of Rochester; and four sis-ters, Rose (Arleigh) Polikoski and Arlene Starkson, both of Rochester, Shirley Schroeder of Elgin and Lorraine (Bob) Reiland of Eyota. Two sisters preceded him in death.
The funeral for Mr. Merkel was held Wednesday, June 14, 2000 at Faith United Methodist Church in Spring Valley, with the Rev. James Ross officiating. Burial was in Hamilton Cemetery in rural Racine. Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home in Spring Valley was in charge of arrangements.
