In a world of mass-produced, carbon copy, electronic images and impersonal life experiences, fine quality service and warm, friendly people are scarce as hen's teeth. But not in Spring Grove.
Spring Grove is a place where going for the mail takes two hours, where having coffee with friends goes on all day.
The pace is slow here - there are no clock towers with bonging reminders that time is escaping. Park benches invite storytellers to Viking Memorial Park in the triangle of the village or to Tollskogen park where children and squirrels frolic on brightly colored equipment.
There's a welcome reassurance here that people are important. We want you to come and meet us, to tell us about your family and the things you like to do. It's possible that you enjoy picnic lunches in serene settings. We can introduce you to many serene settings along three self-guided audio cassette driving tours through the back roads. A fourth driving tour guides you to all the country churches in the area.
While you're out there driving, watch for bald eagles and wild turkeys -- it's common to see flocks of 40-100 at feeding time. The densest population of whitetails in Minnesota is right here in Bluff Country. Maybe you're searching for your roots. Chances are that if you are Norwegian, some branch of your family passed through Spring Grove -- the first Norwegian settlement in Minnesota. Our resident historian, Georgia Rosendahl, will help you trace your immigrant family's history in this area.
If you enjoy collecting hand-made treasures and antiques, there are four shops in Spring Grove. Stop in and check out the Ballard House - an-tiques, specialty shop, Parlor restaurant and information cen-ter. The building is over 100 years old and a main stop-ping point in the city. Open seven days a week 10-5 during their season - May 1-December 30.
Specialty food and drink await you here -- mile high meringue pie and then there's Spring Grove pop! Remember the old fashioned flavors of a soda pop you had when you were a kid? Well they are available here -- 10 flavors. And if you are in Spring Grove between mid June and July 1, the aroma of fresh strawberries guides you to our strawberry farms where succu-lent red jewels nestle among green leaves waiting for you to pick and eat.
Syttende Mai (pronounced soot'ten de my') which translates as the 17th of May, commemorates Norwegian Constitu-tion Day, an event similar to the Fourth of July, will be held May 19,20,21.
Celebrate Norwegian Constitution Day at the first Norwegian settlement in Minnesota during the annual Syttende Mai Festival featuring an arts and crafts fair, historic sites bus tour, Norwegian language church service and Sons of Norway dinner, fiddler's bee, dances, quilt show, folkesmarsj on 10K and 20K trails and parade.
Ye Olde Opera House presents a summer musical the 3rd weekend in July and another theater pro-duction in October. Spring Grove Community Theatre has provided enjoy-ment since 1979.
A carillon installed in memory of Magna and Karl Hoegh plays familiar hymns from the steeple of Trinity Church. We invite you to come again for the sixth season of the year in southeast Minnesota - Indian Summer. We are planning our annual Fall Foliage Festival to be held in October including city wide garage sale, arts and crafts and wagon rides.
East of Spring Grove on Highway 44 is All Phase Arena. If you are a horse lover this is for you - horse shows, team penning, horse sales, cut-ting events all year long.
