Kenneth Noble Alexander

Kenneth Alexander, 89, of Spring Valley, formerly of Preston, died Saturday, July 1, 2000 at the Ostrander Nursing Home.
Born May 7, 1911, near Waterloo, IA, he moved to the Prairie Queen area with his family at age 7 and attended Fillmore County schools. As a young man he helped his father and other farmers, and also worked in the Dakotas and Fillmore County picking corn and shearing sheep. On August 17, 1937 he was united in marriage to Rebecca Grabau at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. The couple lived and farmed in the Greenleafton area. Kenneth served on the Liberty School Board and also on the Rural Telephone Board. He took aviation lessons at Rochester Community College and received his Private Pilots License at age 60. He was a member of the Fillmore County Flying Club. In 1974 he retired from farming and the couple moved to Preston. During retirement he had a woodworking shop and made many unique walnut, oak, and chestnut pieces of furniture for his family. He and his wife traveled extensively in Europe and throughout the United States and spent 10 winters in Apache Junction, AZ. Kenneth was an avid hunter, fisherman, and woodworker. He was also an active member of the Root River Church of the Brethren, later transferring his membership to the Preston United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife Rebecca, a daughter Barbara (William) Storey of Nederland, TX; a son Klaren (Helen) of Atlanta, GA; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a sister Darlene Moyer of Marion, IA and a brother Rufus (Geraldine) of Hutchinson, MN. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Lowell, two brothers, Dale and Donald and one sister Helen Alexander.
Funeral services for Mr. Alexander were held Wednesday, July 5, 2000 at the Preston United Methodist Church with Revs. Anthony Fink and Marilyn Loken co-officiating. Burial was in Prairie Queen Cemetery in rural Preston. Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston was in charge of arrangements.
