Robert Swenson, 74, of Lincoln, Arkansas, formerly of the Ostrander area, died Thursday, July 6, 2000 at the Washington Regional Medical Center E.R. in Fayettville, AR.
Robert Swenson was born May 5, 1926 in Rutland, SD to Clarence Swenson and Louise Beem. He attended elementary school in Marshaltown, IA until moving to Ostrander in 1933 where he was raised by his great uncle and aunt, Nels and Edith Hillestad. In February of 1945 at the age of 18 he entered the United States Navy and served during WWII. He was discharged in July of 1946. He was united in marriage to Arlene Thoreson and to this union two children were born, David Lee and Barbara Ann. Arlene and Robert were later divorced. On October 29, 1971 he was united in marriage to Barbara Sorum Guy in Sandstone, MN. They resided north of Ostrander until 1980 when they moved to Arkansas. Mr. Swenson farmed for most of his life and worked as a security guard part time for Tyson Foods during his retirement. He also served on the LeRoy-Ostrander School board. He enjoyed playing softball, hunting and fishing, and taking care of his many goats and cats.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara of Lincoln, AR, step-children Darwin (Tammi) Guy of LeRoy, Douglas (Peggy) Guy of Spring Valley, Debra Back of LeRoy and Dawn (Nub) Elmore of Siloam Springs, AR. Also a daughter-in-law Dianne Swenson of Spring Valley, a grandson, Timothy (Brandi) Swenson of Stewartville, seven step-grandchildren Levi, Destiny, Sarah, Shelly, Justin, Tyler, and Trista, one great-granddaughter Lauren and a step-great-grandson Cameron. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Barbara Ann, a son David Lee, and a brother, Walter.
Funeral services for Mr. Swenson were held Tuesday, July 11, 2000 at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ostrander with the Rev. Norman Bauer officiating. Burial was in the Bloomfield Cemetery in Bloomfield Township, Fillmore County. Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home in LeRoy was in charge of arragements.
