Movie night in Whalan

Fri, Aug 20th, 2010
Posted in Arts & Culture

Remember the good ol' days when you watched movies outdoors. Well, in Whalan, we remember. Movies were projected on the city hall of Whalan for years, and we are doing it again.

Great entertainment, popcorn and an outdoor movie. What more could you ask for on a beautiful summer evening? That evening will be Saturday, August 28, 2010. The movie will be shown on the outdoor wall of the Whalan Town Hall - as was done in the 1930's & 40's.

The evening will begin at 7pm with toe tapping music by popular MC & musician Walter Bradley & Company. They will keep you entertained with music and stories until about 8pm or when it gets dark enough to show the movie. You may even hear some people chanting, "Hank, Hank, turn the crank, the river is coming up the bank," just as they did when they were children anxious for the movie to begin all those years ago.

The feature movie is Second Hand Lion. This is a story about young Walter (not Bradley) who gets stuck on his "crazy" uncle's farm for the summer, the last place in the world he wants to be. Walter soon gets caught up in their mysterious past. The rumors that his uncles (academy award winners, Robert Duvall and Michael Caine) were bank robbers, or even worse, are hard to believe, but they do seem to have an endless supply of cash.

Little by little an amazing story comes to life. These tales not only bring him closer to his uncles, but also teach him what it means to believe in something - whether it is true or not. The movie is funny, adventurous and heartwarming.

Join us on Saturday evening, August 28, in Whalan for some lively music and a movie the whole family will enjoy. There is no charge for the music or the movie, but there will be a free will offering to help renovate the city hall of Whalan. We will have a refreshment stand with popcorn, soda and snacks. Bring along a comfortable lawn chair.
