Richard ‘Dick’ Rilling

Richard Rilling, 65, of rural Mabel, a longtime area farmer, died Thursday, July 27, 2000 at his home.
Born August 14, 1934, in Jackson County, WI, he moved with his parents to the Canoe-Sattre, IA area as an infant and to his farm home in rural Mabel in 1947. He was confirmed November 14, 1948 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Locust, IA. On June 29, 1957 he married Ellen Droivold at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Caledonia. They have resided on the family farm since. He was a member of the Hesper Lutheran Church and enjoyed farming, his Charolais cattle, deer hunting, fishing, family, and friends.
Dick is survived by his wife Ellen, a daughter B.J. (Jerry) Berning of Burr Oak, IA; three sons, Rick of Highlandville, IA, John (Cindy) of Bluffton, IA, and Donnie (Lynne) of Decorah, IA; five grandchildren, Justin, Jessica, and Morgan, Joey and Alicia; a step-grandson, James (Tammy) Berning; two step-great grandchildren Taylor and Sophie; and a brother Joel. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
Funeral services for Mr. Rilling were held Monday, July 31, 2000 at the Hesper Lutheran Church with the Rev. Hans Floan officiating. Burial was in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery. Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel was in charge of arrangements.
