Ralph Youngs, 86, of Chicago, formerly of rural Chatfield, died Wednesday, August 16, 2000, in an Evanston, Ill., hospital.

Mr. Youngs was born December 26, 1913, in rural Chatfield. He attended rural grade school through the eighth grade and worked as a farm laborer near Chatfield until 1938, when he moved to Chicago, where he worked for Helene Curtis Cosmetics until joining the Army on May 26, 1942. He served in the Army until December 31, 1945, then returned to Chicago, where he worked as a machinist until his retirement at age 69. He was active in volunteer work for a number of church and charitable organizations, including the Christian League for the Handicapped, in which he served for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Chatfield Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years. He never married.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Atkinson of Rochester, and a brother, Joe (Lorraine) Youngs of Coon Rapids, Minn.

A graveside memorial service for Mr. Youngs was held Friday, August 25 in the Chatfield Cemetery. Chatfield VFW will conduct a military service at the cemetery. Riley Funeral Home in Chatfield was in charge of arrangements.
