J. Douglas Utley

Mr. Utley, 96, of Preston, a retired farmer, died Sunday evening, September 3, 2000, at Preston Good Samaritan Center where he had resided since late 1999.

He was born in Preston on November 25, 1903, the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Hutton) Utley. He grew up in the area and graduated from Preston High School in 1922. He represented his class at the 2000 All-School reunion as its oldest member to attend. On Nov. 27, 1924, he married Mildred Hovelson in Preston and they farmed on the Utley family farm, "The Pines," west of Preston until 1966 when they retired and moved into Preston. Mr. Utley was a bus driver for the Preston School District for many years. His wife died in 1992. He was a member of Preston United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Austin of Northfield, MN; a son, Robert (Arlene) of Reedsburg, WI; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Cummings Utley of Preston; nine grandchildren, G. Douglas (Yasuho) Austin of Lakeville, MN, Gary (Susan) Austin of Eden Prairie, MN, Mark (Tammy) Utley of Buffalo, MN, Jeanne (Mark) Hargesheimer of Rochester, Chris (Barbara) Utley of Prairie du Sac, WI, Karen Sullivan and Jay (Margaret) Utley all of Reedsburg, WI, David Utley of Oregon, WI, and John (Karen) Utley of Platteville, WI; 14 great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; a stepgreat-great-grandaughter; and two sisters, Esther Pickett and Ruth Sample, both of Preston. He was preceded in death by his wife, a son, Charles; a brother, Wilbur; and a sister, June Maust.

The funeral for J. Douglas Utley was held Wednesday, September 6, 2000, at the Preston United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Anthony Fink officiating. Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery in Preston. Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston is in charge of arrangements.
