Norman Hoff, 76, of Mabel, a retired equipment operator, died Saturday, September 16, 2000, at Cuyuna Health Care Center in Crosby, MN.

He was born March 15, 1924, in Preble Township, Fillmore County, and attended Tawney School. In March 1943, he was inducted into the Army, served as a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division and received a number of awards, including American and Asiatic-Pacific theater medals, the Philippine liberation medal with two bronze stars and the good conduct medal. He returned to Fillmore County following his discharge in February 1946. On November 29, 1947, he married Marjorie Williams at South Fork Church. They farmed for five years before moving to Rushford where he was employed by the city as a heavy equipment operator. In 1969, they moved to Cottage Grove, MN, where he was an equipment operator for the city until his retirement in 1989. During retirement, the couple resided in rural Mabel during the summers and in Apache Junction, AZ, during the winters. Mr. Hoff played the guitar, saxophone, banjo and violin, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, the outdoors and tractors. He was a member of Scheie Lutheran Church, VFW, International Union of Operating Engineers and the Twin Cities Musicians Union.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Marcia (Gene) Burt of Hastings, MN, Patricia (Joey) Page of Spring Grove and Cindy (Dale) Westhoff of Crosby; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Koonst of Hastings and Stella Stensgard of Harmony; and a brother, Milton (Dora) of Connecticut. He was preceded in death by a son, a daughter, a sister and two brothers.

The funeral for Mr. Hoff was held Wednesday, September 20, 2000, at Scheie Lutheran Church in rural Mabel, with the Rev. Mary Waudby officiating. Burial was in Scheie Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Mabel VFW and American Legion. Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel was in charge of arrangements.
