Rachel Griswold, 97, of Mabel, a longtime area resident, died Monday, September 18, 2000, at Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel.

Rachel Sanden was born Feb. 24, 1903, in Kvam, Norway to Ole and Thora (Krok) Sanden, and attended school in Hesper, IA. On May 19, 1921, she married Floyd Griswold in Decorah, IA, and they lived in the Mabel and Hesper areas all their married lives. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Mabel.

Survivors include a daughter, Norma Nohre of Purcellville, VA; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Olga Christensen of Richfield, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son , Burr Griswold, a daughter, Anita Kjome, four brothers and a sister.

The funeral for Rachel Griswold was held Thursday, September 21, 2000, at First Lutheran Church in Mabel, with the Rev. Lloyd Menke officiating. Burial was in the Hesper, IA, Public Cemetery. Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel was in charge of arrangements.
