Dean Berning, 74, of Des Moines, IA, formerly of Preston, died from complications of cancer on Friday, September 15, 2000, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

Mr. Berning was born in Preston and moved to Des Moines in the early 1960’s. He was a retired general agent for Life Investors Insurance Co. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, Hi-Twelve, The Masters Club of Life Investors, Acanthus Lodge, and the Tux Brigade of the Za Ga Zig Shrine. He married Alice Anderson. He enjoyed fishing trips to Canada and spending time with his family, friends, and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Alice; a daughter Barbara Whipple of Overland Park, KS; a son Mark Berning of San Diego, CA; a sister, Maxine Vandewege of Las Vegas, NV; and five grandchildren.

The funeral for Mr. Berning was held Monday, September 18, 2000, at Immanuel United Methodist Church. Burial will take place at a later date in Oakwood Cemetery in Rochester, MN.
