Walter "Fish" Ward, Sr., 98, formerly of the Mabel and Burr Oak areas, died Tuesday, September 19, 2000 at the Harmony Health Care Center where he had resided seven years.

He was born June 21, 1902, in Henrytown and attended school there. On February 18, 1925, he married Margaret Rice in Canton and they farmed in the Canton, Mabel, and Burr Oak areas until their retirement in 1968. During retirement, they lived in rural Mabel. After his wife's death seven years ago, Mr. Ward entered Harmony Health Care Center. He was a member of Canton-Scotland Presbyterian Church and enjoyed gardening and dart ball.

Survivors include four sons, Robert (Marlene) of Mabel, Jimmie (Valli) of Cresco, Walter Jr. (Carol) of Harmony and Earl of Minneapolis; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by two grand-children, three sisters and seven brothers.

The funeral for Mr. Ward was held on Friday, September 22, at Canton-Scotland Presbyterian Church in Canton. Burial was in Mabel Public Cemetery. Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel was in charge of arrangements.
