The court is their domain. The ball their weapon of choice. The net their gateway to victory. This is the universe that the Mabel-Canton Volleyball Team has created through a legacy of domination in the Southeast Conference.

On November 4th, the hunger for the Section 1A Championship lingered in the air as the Mabel-Canton Cougars prowled around the painted lines of the Mayo Civic Center. The Cougars (29-3 overall) demoralized the Lyle/Pacelli Lions by winning the first game 15-5 with the help of Jenny Himmer using her dynamite serve to score the last four points of the game.

The two powerhouses, Nicole Pastwa and Molly Horihan, rapidly fired bullets in game 2 to build a 10-3 lead. The Lions gathered momentum as Laura Nelson rattled off four straight points, but the Cougars Andrea Dahl dug the ball extremely well to win 15-7.

Lyle/Pacelli came out fired up, but they were no match for the Cougars in game 3. Chelsey Bigalks remarkable angle shots kept the Lions guessing, and Jenni Aasums stupendous digs stopped the Lions Joan Sheedy dead in her tracks. Horihans sideout kill and match-winning serve ended the game 15-9.

Setter Shelby Bigalks flawless night of 40 assists decided the game for the Cougars with Horihan's tremendous 21 kills, Pastwa's 11 kills, and Chelsey Bigalk's 8 kills . From the serving line Himmer and Aasum had
perfect nights with 11 points respectively. Dahl contributed 11 digs while Aasum led the team with 15.

Defeating Lyle/Pacelli, 15-5, 15-7, 15-9, placed Mabel-Canton on top of the world as they won the Section 1A Championship and the opportunity of a
lifetime to go to state.

As Coach Lonnie Morken would say, Are we happy? Yes. But are we satisfied? No!

When the Journal went to press on Friday, Kristin and her teammates on the Mabel-Canton Cougars volleyball team were playing in the Minnesota State High School Volleyball Tournament.
