Kenneth Briggs, 86, of Spring Valley, a retired heavy equipment operator, died Wednesday, November 8, 2000, at Seasons Hospice in Rochester.

Born March 4, 1914, in Finchford, IA, he lived in the Spring Valley area after moving there as a child. On November 1, 1939, he married Hope Martin in Saratoga, IA. Mr. Briggs helped develop Mystery Cave and was a guide there in the 1930ís. During World War II, he served in the Army Engineers in the European Theater. After the war, he was a heavy equipment operator for Miller Brothers and Freeman Construction until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of Operator Engineers Union Local , the VFW, American Legion, Spring Valley HIstorical Society and Faith United Methodist Church. He enjoyed playing the guitar, fishing and gardening.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Bev (Jim) Faulhaber of Rochester and Shirley Henderson of Lancaster, TX; two sons, Gordon (Donna) and Kevin (Barb), both of Rochester; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, a daughter, a granddaughter, a great-granddaughter, three brothers and a sister.

The funeral was held on Saturday, November 11, 2000 at Faith United Methodist Church, Spring Valley, with the Rev. James Ross officiating. Burial was in the Spring Valley Cemetery.

Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
