Birde Hanson, 72, of Houston, died Thursday, November 16, 2000 at her home.

Birde Roslyne Houser was born Jan. 22, 1928, in Sheldon, MN. She was raised in the Houston County area. She married Charles Hanson on May 15, 1961, in Decorah, IA. They lived in many places while he was in the military. In 1971, they moved to Houston. She was a member of the Cross of Christ Lutheran Church and its Lady's Circle and the American Legion Auxiliary. She participated in the Eagles Cancer Telethon and the monthly Legion steak fries. Her hobbies included gardening, crafts, baking, canning and playing euchre. She was well known for her Christmas teddy bear collection of more than 300 bears. She and her husband managed the Houston American Legion Club for more than 15 years.

Survivors include seven children, Gene (Linda) Stark of Houston, Jodine (Dwight) Emerson of Saugus, CA., Dorothy (Sam) Kuster of Houston, Dera Johnson of Rochester, Debra (Mark) Honsey and Marion (Gary) Skree, both of Rushford, and Brian (Michelle) Hanson of Houston; 20 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ralph (Jesse) Houser of La Crescent. She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, six brothers and three sisters.

The funeral for Birde Hanson was held on Monday, November 20, 2000, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Lane Zaffke officiating. Burial was in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Houston. Hoff Funeral Homes-Houston Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
