Mary Francis Fjelstad Thompson

Mary Francis Fjelstad Thompson, 74, of Buffalo City, WI, died Tuesday, December 12, 2000 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse of complications of lung cancer.

Mrs. Thompson was born to William and Alice (Sheppard) Fjelstad on October 11, 1926 in Wykoff. She graduated from Wykoff High School in 1945 and worked for her grandmother in Wykoff at the Sheppard Maternity Home until her marriage to John Thompson on March 5, 1946. Mary and John lived and farmed in the Wykoff area until 1955 when they moved to Preston, and in 1958 to rural Preston. In 1961, the Thompsons moved to Winona.

While living in Winona, Mrs. Thompson worked at the Watkins Nursing Home while pursuing further education, graduating from Winona State University with a degree in therapeutic recreation in 1980. Upon the death of her husband in 1997, Mrs. Thompson moved to Buffalo City.

Survivors include six sons, Patrick (Janet) of Appleton, MN; Daniel (Bonnie) of Minneiska, MN; Thomas (Debra) , James (Jenny), and William of Winona; and Peter (Jennifer) of Lakeville, MN and several grandchildren and one great-grandaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and three brothers, Charles, Donald and David.

A funeral mass was held for Mrs. Thompson on Saturday, December 16, 2000 with the Rev. Shawn Haremza officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery in Winona.
