Dr. Elwin L. Morse, 80, of Spring Valley, a retired dentist, died of complications of brain cancer Saturday December 9, 2000 at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.

Born November 16, 1920, at his parents' home in LeRoy, he graduated from LeRoy High School in 1938 and from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 1944. He was a
dental officer in the Navy during World War II, with duty in the Asia-Pacific theater and during the post-war occupation of Japan. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Lieutenant S.G. On June 26, 19, he married Lavonne Jones at the Methodist Church in Chester, Iowa. Since retiring in 1988, he and his wife maintained a winter home in Sun Lakes, Ariz.

Dr. Morse was a member of the American, Minnesota, Southeastern District and Zumbro Valley dental societies, was active in Delta Sigma Delta dental fraternity, and for nine years, was director of the Delta Dental Plan of Minnesota. He was a member of the Spring Valley School Board for 11 years and served as president, was active in the VFW, Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club, and served as commissioner of the Spring Valley Water and Light Commission for nine years.

He belonged to the Sun Lakes Shrine Club, was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and American Legion, and a member of Faith United Methodist Church and Root River Country Club. He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed boating and fishing.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Darla (Tom) Vashro and Marilyn Christiansen, both of Edina, Minn.; a son, Richard (Mary Kaye) of Dexter, Mich.; six grandchildren; two step-granddaughters; three brothers, Dr. Norval (Margaret) of Preston, Keith of North Fort Myers, Fla., and Dr. Roger (Carol) of LeRoy; and a sister, Lois (Charles) Wold of Grand Rapids, Minn.

A memorial service for Dr. Elwin L. Morse was held on Tuesday, December 12 at Faith
United Methodist Church in Spring Valley, with the Rev. James Ross officiating. Burial was at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, with full military rites.

Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home in Spring Valley was in charge of arrangements.
