Hans Paulsen, 90, of Ostrander, a retired farmer, died Sunday, December 31, 2000, at Ostrander Nursing Home.

Born Nov. 14, 1910, in Denmark, he came to America with his family at age 4, grew up in Iowa and Minnesota and attended school through the eighth grade. He worked for Reed and Murdock prior to his marriage. On December 25, 1937, he married Alice Howard at her parents' home and they farmed near Ostrander from 1941 until the mid-1980s. His wife died in February 1999. Mr. Paulsen served on the Sample School Board and on the LeRoy-Ostrander School Board, including being named as board member of the year. He was also a Fillmore County commissioner for several years and worked for the ASC office in Preston. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol (Marv) Lenz and Sue (Tom) Fowler, both of Spring Valley; a son, Kenneth (Chong OK) of Tucson, AZ; a daughter-in-law Lydell Reinardy of Cannon Falls, MN; 11 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and a sister, Anna King of Adams; and a sister-in-law Ruth Paulson of Ostrander.. He was also preceded in death by two sons and a brother.

The funeral for Mr. Paulsen was held Wednesday, January 3, 2001, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ostrander, with the Rev. Norman Bauer officiating. Burial was in the Ostrander Cemetery. Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home in Spring Valley was in charge of arrangements.
