R-P begins year with positive surprises

The relatively short Monday, September 20th board meeting detailed both a smooth start to the 2010-2011 school years and some welcome surprises.

Enrollment in the district is up nine from earlier projected enrollment figures to 626.

In late August, the board received confirmation of additional funding through the Jobs Bill. The allotment, which amounts to $128,658.00, is intended for new hires or rehires. The money must be obligated by September 2012.

R-P already has solid plans for the funds, intending to split the 51 fourth grade students into three sections for the year. The board has approved the hiring of former (2008) R-P student teacher Jessica Johnson as the new fourth grade teacher. She will teach alongside Mrs. Mary Hoiland and Mrs. Mary Wolter. The position is expected to be in place for two consecutive years.

Superintendent Chuck Ehler acknowledges the timing may not be ideal, but the funds are a great help to the district.

The district has seen indications that it will not suffer Aid Delayed Payments, due to its current fund balance. Districts that have a fund balance below $700 per student, such as R-P, will not be impacted. Other districts may be forced to use reserves.

The board will be meeting with ICS Consulting, Inc. on October 6th in regards to the New School Initiative. ICS is a Mounds View, Minnesota, firm which offers planning for all areas of project development. The firm recently completed a successful $15.4 million bond referendum for the Fairmont School District.

In other notable news, the district offers its congratulations to former and long-time head football coach Jim Reinhardt. The Minnesota State High School Coaches Association will be inducting Reinhardt into its Hall of Fame October 9th.

The next regularly scheduled board meeting is Monday, October 18th, at 5:30 pm, in the high school biology room. The time of this meeting has been moved back to accommodate an audit presentation.
