Valentines Day

Have you ever thought about why we have Valentine’s Day, or who St.Valentine even was? I know that I don't think about this when the day comes around. I usually just think of the things that come with it like cards, chocolates, romance, hearts, and even the old Valentine’s Day boxes that I made in elementary school. I decided that I would do some research, so I could learn more about Valentine’s Day and share it with you.

First of all, Valentine’s Day was named after St. Valentine. He was said to be a priest from the time of the Roman Empire. In this time, Emperor Claudius II of Rome had a difficult time drafting men for the military, so he stopped all of the engagements and marriages.

Now, the young people became very upset about this new law that had just been made. St. Valentine didn't agree with this law either, so he started to perform secret marriages for these couples. Even though the marriages were done in secret, Emperor Claudius II found out. St. Valentine was taken to jail and his punishment would be death. But before his death, he became friends with one of the prison guards' daughters. A note he left for her before he died ended with "Love from your Valentine." He was then killed on February 14, and this is why we have Valentine’s Day today.

Because of the note St. Valentine wrote and the loving deeds he did, we get the customs and traditions that go along with Valentine’s Day. The most common tradition around the world is to exchange cards with some kind of message on them for the ones you love.

Throughout the world there are many customs that are used to unite a boy and girl, possibly for marriage. For example, in some countries, a young woman is given a gift of clothing from a young man. If she keeps this gift, it means that she will marry him.

In addition to this, there are many more legends and stories to tell you about St. Valentine and Valentine’s Day. This legend I have shared with you may or may not be true, but I thought it gave me a better picture of where Valentine’s Day comes from. It is a day when we can show love to our friends or loved ones for their deeds, whether large or small, that they have done for us. I hope you take the time to think about these things, and show your love to everyone on this special holiday.
