Doris Emily Engel, 100, of Chatfield, a former teacher, died March 7, 2001 at Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield where she had lived 6 1/2 years.

Doris Emily Lillie was born Sept. 10, 1900, in Jordan Township, Fillmore County. She graduated from Chatfield High School in 1922 and attended normal teachers training. A teacher for 21 years, she taught in Rochester, Marion, Preston, Pleasant Grove and Chatfield-area rural schools. On June 3, 1929, she married Walter Engel at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa; he died in 1969. Mrs. Engel was a member of the Eastern Star, a past matron in the White Shrine, and belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Survivors include a daughter, Jo Mae (Warren) Hess of Stewartville; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, two grandchildren, a sister and a brother.

The funeral for Doris Emily Engel was March 10, 2001 at Pioneer Presbyterian Church in Chatfield with the Rev. Tim Gerarden officiating. Spring burial will be in Chatfield Cemetery. Riley Funeral Home in Chatfield was in charge of arrangements.
