Peter J. Thauwald

Peter Jerome Thauwald died at the V.A. Hospital in Waco, Texas, on Monday, April 23, 2001. He was 87 years old.

Peter Thauwald was born in Gibbon, Minn. on September 17, 1913. He was a hair-dresser and served as secretary-treasurer of the Minnesota State Board of Examiners of Cosmetology for ten years. On March 12, 1942, he enlisted in the Army and was assigned to the 5th Armored Division Tank Battalion, driving a light tank. He saw action in Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland. On December 12, 1944, during the battle of the Huertgen Forest in Germany, his tank exploded a land mine and was destroyed. Mr. Thauwald lost both legs below the knee and was honorably discharged November 16, 1945. During his recuperation he met a nurse named Dorothea Ice. They were married on August 30, 1947. He was later appointed to the Veterans Administration as a prosthetic representative... “to teach others to walk,” and retired in 1980. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and Brazos Meadows Baptist Church.

He is survived by a son Pete (Marsha) Thauwald of Waco; a daughter, Katherine Thauwald of Fort Worth, Texas; and three grandsons. He was proceeded in death by his wife, Dorothea; his mother, Clara Thauwald; two sisters, Holly Brissman and Dolores Bridges; and a brother, Dale Thauwald.

The services for Mr. Thauwald were held Thursday, April 26, 2001, at Brazos Meadows Baptist Church in Hewitt, Texas. Internment followed the ceremony at Oakwood Cemetery.
