John F. "Jack" Schaefer, 81, of Fairfax, Minn., formerly of Preston, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, in the Wabasso Care Center after a lengthy illness.

He was born May 10, 1919, in Cresco, Iowa. He attended country schools in Fillmore County and later worked on area farms with his brothers. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 88th Infantry Division. He married Ruby Sander of Fairfax in 19 and they farmed in the Preston area. They moved to Fairfax in 1956. They were later divorced. He is survived by three sons, John Jr., of Fairfax, James of Medford, Minn., and Mark of New Ulm, Minn.; six daughters, Mary Franson of Utah, Margret Twinstra of Jasper, Minn., Jeanette Barber and Debbie Peterson, both of Cottonwood, Minn., and Margie Medina and Bonita Durbin, both of Fairfax; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mona Holets of Chatfield Care Center and Pearl (Wyman) Yaste of Preston. He was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters, and a granddaughter.

A private memorial service was held Tuesday, April 24, 2001. The body was cremated. Burial will be at a later date.
