John G. Martin

John G. Martin, 89, of Chatfield, a retired farmer and former school bus driver, died April 30, 2001 at Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield, where he had resided since October 1996.

Born Sept. 20, 1911, in Florenceville, Iowa, he grew up there and graduated from high school in Cresco, Iowa. He was a farm laborer in the Chatfield area, then farmed near Lime Springs, Iowa, and from 19 until his retirement in 1972 farmed near Greenleafton. After retirement, he returned to Chatfield and was a bus driver for Chatfield schools and a driver for Semcac. On Aug. 19, 1938, he married Helen Benson, and she died on May 5, 1955. He married Marilyn Case on July 11, 1957, in Chatfield. She preceded him in death on March 11, 1998.

Survivors include a daughter, Lolaraye (Irving) Wiarda, Jr. of Dows, Iowa; a stepdaughter, Arlys Wilbur of Alliance, Neb.; two granddaughters; several stepgrandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A brother preceded him in death.

The funeral for John G. Martin was held May 3, 2001 at Pioneer Presbyterian Church in Chatfield, with the Rev. Tim Gerarden officiating. Burial was in Chatfield Cemetery. Riley Funeral Home in Chatfield was in charge of arrangements.
