Herschel Berning

Herschel Berning, 94, of Spring Valley, a former truck driver and farmer, died May 7, 2001 at Spring Valley Care Center, where he had lived almost seven years.

He was born May 28, 1906, in Carimona Township, Fillmore County, to William Berning and Minnie Brusse Berning. He attended country schools. On Sept. 28, 1927, he married Geneva Mathison in Luverne, Minn. She died Aug. 8, 1997.

Survivors include three daughters, Genevieve (Norman) Arends of Austin, Geraldine (Ellsworth)Rindels of Rochester and Darlene Harvey of Danbury, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lena (Lloyd) McKenzie of Spring Valley. He was preceded in death by a son, a sister and a brother.

The funeral for Herschel Berning was held May 10, 2001 at Faith United Methodist Church in Spring Valley, with the Rev. James Ross officiating. Burial was in Cherry Grove Cemetery. Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home in Spring Valley was in charge of arrangements.
