Ella Barnes, 96, of Decorah, died Friday, May 11, 2001, at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah.

Ella Elizabeth Naab was born on September 24, 1904 in Springfield, South Dakota, the daughter of Fredrick and Mary Elizabeth (Hamilton) Naab. At the age of five she moved with her family to Ocheyedan, Iowa and then to Bonair, Iowa. Ella graduated from Cresco High School and then attended Normal Teachers Training. She then taught school at the Fremont Country School near Harmony.

Ella married Lester Barnes on April 27,1929 in Cresco. They farmed in Fremont Township south of Harmony until 1946 when they moved east of Decorah. She lived there until she entered the nursing home in 1997. She was a member of the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, Woodside Mission Circle and was a 4-H leader.

Survivors include three sons; Richard (Donna)Barnes of Harmony; Allen Barnes of Hesper, Iowa; and Kenneth (Yvonne) Barnes of Decorah; three daughters; Elizabeth Mostrom of Albert Lea; Eileen (Earl) Smith of Hudson, Iowa; and Dorothy (John) Esse of Ely, Minn.; one daughter-in-law, Ila Barnes of Rochester; twenty-one grandchildren; forty-two great-grandchildren; and seventeen great-great-grandchildren.

Ella was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lester; son, Ronald; son-in-law, Spencer Mostrom; one granddaughter, Karen Mostrom; two great-grandchildren, Ricky Barnes and Cory Matzen; two sisters, Grace Bessman and Esther Elders; and two brothers, Reuben and Lloyd Naab.
