Esther B. Jahr, 88, of Rushford, a longtime area resident, died May 19, 2001 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.

Esther B. Engrav was born on July 26, 1912, in Glenwood Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, later moved with her family to Highland Prairie, south of Rushford, and graduated from Rushford High School in 1932. She married Raymond Jahr on Nov. 23, 1934, at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church. They lived at Highland Prairie until moving to Rushford in 1960. She worked at Smith Department Store, Farmers Market, and Wee World Day Care until her retirement in 1984. She was a member of Highland Prairie Lutheran Church and was a former Sunday school teacher and church treasurer. She was a 4-H leader and senior citizens volunteer.

She is survived by one son, Carl (Janice) of Billings, Mont.; three daughters, Ruby (Daniel) Heiden of Minneapolis, Carol (Kenneth) Kingsley of Peterson, and Marilyn (Roger) Hofschulte of Mazeppa; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Clarence Engrav of Mabel and Forest Engrav of La Crosse, Wis.; and two sisters, Edna Moe of Decorah, Iowa, and Emma (Melvin) Anderson of Waukon, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, six brothers, three sisters and two great-granddaughters.

The funeral for Esther B. Jahr was held May 22, 2001 at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Peterson with the Rev. Rod Nygren officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Hoff Funeral Homes-Cook Rushford Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
