The City of Lanesboro is concerned about the odors from the Ethanol Plant! Why donít they do something about their own problems first?

The whole town is filled full of smoke from campfires on most nights. Also, the odor and mess from manure that cattle haulers spill out on the streets and highway is far worse of a problem.

Lanesboro has a dump station for R.V.ís. Why canít the dump station be put in near the Sales Barn for the cattle haulers? And make sure they use it or be arrested for littering.

I never would have thought that a local paper would be generating so much excitement but I have been wrong before. All the articles and letters about the decision by the county commissioners not to offer former County Highway Engineer Steve Voigt is never going to solve anything, just like the Kennedy Assassination. And the Journal, in my opinion, isn't doing much, if anything, to resolve the situation. I would go as far to say that it is doing more to keep the "fires burning" then to put them out. Remember, the editor of the paper, John Torgrimson, is the same person, who in years past, has written on numerous occasions that the county would be better served if the county governing system was changed from the current county commissioners, who have personal contact with their constituents and understand the needs of the county, to that of a county manager, somewhat similar to a city manager. Maybe Mrs. Ladsten is correct in saying that the editor is just getting back at the commissioners because the paper lost the bid to be the county's legal paper.

I think that more and more that the Fillmore County Journal is trying to imitate the big city papers with their liberal or conservative positions and it just isn't working.

Within the last several years I have noticed a change in the Journal's format. A county paper is supposed to be about the county which shares it's name with the paper. I don't think this is the case when the front page article is about The Bonehunter's War or any of the other front-page articles that have nothing to do with Fillmore County. When I look at the Preston Republican-Leader or the Spring Valley Tribune, all I see on the front pages are news about what has happened in the community. These papers also have more information that one wouldn't be able to find anywhere else, like the bowling results or anything that has to do with sports(where in the Journal is there a sports report?) Also, a lot of the articles that are in the Journal have already appeared in the other local papers the week before. What kind of reporting is that? Maybe it's time for a change in leadership at the Journal.

p.s. I will be surprised if this letter to the editor will appear and if it does I wonder how much of it will be edited.
