Kenneth J. McConnell, 70, of Mabel, a longtime farmer and DECO employee, died June 9, 2001 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.

He was born March 10, 1931, in Decorah, Iowa, to Emmett and Anne (Fitzgerald) McConnell. He attended Decorah schools. From 1951 to 1953 he served in the Army as a mechanic and was stationed in Texas. On Feb. 15, 1958, he married Eleanor Erickson at Assumption Catholic Church in Canton. They lived and farmed in the Hesper, Iowa area, and he also worked at DECO in Decorah for 29 years. After moving to Mabel in 1992, he was employed for a short time at Woodland Industries in Caledonia and at Wal-Mart in Decorah. Mr. McConnell was a member of St. Olaf Catholic Church in Mabel, Knights of Columbus and American Legion. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and playing cards.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Elroy (Charlene) of Prairie du Chien, Wis., and Daniel (Corrine) of Stewartville; a daughter, Marie (Zane) Dubbels of Eyota; and six grandchildren. Two brothers preceded him in death.

A funeral Mass for Kenneth J. McConnell was held June 13, 2001 at St. Olaf Catholic Church, with the Rev. Steve Peterson officiating. Private burial was in St. Benedict's Catholic Cemetery. Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel was in charge of arrangements.
