Peterson Resigns

Fillmore County Commissioner Gary Peterson announced his resignation to the County Board at last Tuesday’s meeting. Peterson, who has been a Commissioner for 16 years, was just reelected in November to another four-year term. He had run uncontested and been re-elected for the district Three position.

The resignation was presented in a written letter to the Board during a very full agenda at the Board’s weekly meeting. Peterson offered to stay in the position until the people of the third district elect a new commissioner.

Last year, Peterson accepted a full-time position as news director of KAAL-TV in Austin. Citing the nearly full time requirements of being a county commissioner, his letter of resignation stated that balancing the time requirements of the new job with the time required of a commissioner was impossible. A TV camera crew from KAAL-TV was present to film Peterson’s resignation.

An election will be held in district three to elect a replacement for Peterson. A primary election would also need to be held if more than two people file candidacy for the position.

No decision has been made on the official filing period. The Fillmore County Auditor’s Office has been in contact with the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office about the resignation. Ideally the county would like to hold the election on March 15 when township elections are held.
