The Legion in Harmony has been sitting empty without any visitors for more than a year now. All that changed on October 1 when Troy Kelly and his sister-in-law, Stephanie Kelly, opened the doors for business.

Troy Kelly worked there about fifteen years ago when it was still being run by the Legion board. Shortly after that, the Legion began leasing out the building. It went through a few different people before Kelly heard that it was available again.

At that time, Kelly was living in Red Wing managing a Pizza Hut. He moved LeRoy, and began the paperwork that would enable him to start up the bar again. His sister-in-law Stephanie is his business partner in this new adventure.

In order for them to open the doors on October 1, they had to go through a lot of paperwork. "We had to file for a liquor license," said Kelly. "But we had to have our dram insurance in place before getting the liquor license."

They also had to get their state and federal tax ID numbers, and a buyer's card in order to purchase from distributors. They met with distributors to order the alcohol, which came just in time.

"We opened the doors at 3:00, and the alcohol came at 2:45," said Kelly. He also said the state and federal tax ID numbers came two doors before the opening.

Kelly was drawn to the Harmony area. "It's like home to me," he said. "Some of my best memories are right here in this bar."

Kelly remembered that his wife went into labor with one of their children during one of his pool tournaments many years ago.

"I've always been happiest here in this area," said Kelly.

Kelly lived in Red Wing for ten years before moving to LeRoy. Even so, he has been coming to the area every year for dart tournaments for the cancer telethon. The Harmony Legion now has another dart team that has competitions with Wheelers in Harmony, the Servicemen's Club in Preston, Kendallville, and other places in the area.

The biggest thing planned for the Legion in the near future is a Halloween party on Friday, October 29. According to Kelly, they will be having Docs DJ from Plainview there playing music. There will be a costume contest with a first prize gift of a $30 tab.

The dance hall can also be rented out for private parties or used for dances and other celebrations.

"We just want everyone to get out and have fun, have a great time," said Kelly.

Kelly is very excited about his new life running the Harmony Legion.

"I'm living the dream," he said. "This is what I want to do."
