The regular monthly Chatfield School Board meeting took place on Tuesday, October 18th, at the high school media center. Preceding the regular meeting was a public referendum informational meeting that was open to the public. The meeting was to inform the public on the referendum vote that will be included on the November 2nd Election Day ballot. All members of the school board were present at the regular meeting in addition to English Instructor Ben Volker, Secondary Principal Randy Paulson, and Student Senate Representatives Sara Costello and Sarah Johnson.

In the report from the Student Senate, members Sara Costello and Sarah Johnson gave a summary of the successful homecoming events that took place including a game night, a movie night, and a dance. Principal Randy Paulson stated, "Senior leadership was fantastic for the events of homecoming week." They also stated that the Student Senate is working with the FFA in order to have a Fall Festival which will include a carnival.

Superintendent Ed Harris's monthly presentation to the board began with the results from the spring sports survey. Girl's golf showed a considerable amount of interest with about 18 students interested. Boy's golf did not display as high an interest. Track had a solid statistic of interest with about 60 students showing that they would like to participate. The facilities portion of the presentation was dedicated mostly to roof maintenance and the sidewalk project. Harris reported that the first phase in updating the roof is ready to begin after getting quotes for the project. "The main issue is to work on the edges. The rest of the roof is solid," he commented. The sidewalk project has been completed, but there will be a safety rail installed where a culvert joins the sidewalk. The school is looking forward to automate employee time sheets and leave slips. The new computer software would ensure payroll accuracy and would allow office personnel to save one or two days per month when dealing with attendance.

Principal Randy Paulson also gave a report to the board. He noted that some FFA members would be attending the National FFA Convention. Shaelyn Hareldson is the first member from Chatfield to be accepted into the National FFA band. The school also purchased student planners that were half the price of the ones previously used. Time was allotted to discuss a trial for the use of student cell phones in school. Juniors and seniors will be involved in the trial that will allow them to use their phones during lunch. The trial will begin after MEA and last until Thanksgiving. Board Chair Jerry Chase commented, "I think it's a good idea to let the students know that there is an allotted time for cell phone usage." A brief discussion on how to deal with bullying and cyber bullying also took place. The elementary school now has worksheets to describe, analyze, and solve bullying cases. The worksheet will go home to parents to notify them if an issue arises with their child.

The board hired Monica Gusa as the new school nurse. The 2010-2011 seniority list was adopted. The resignation of high school para-professional Vicki Volker was also recognized. An advertisement for this position was approved.

The meeting was adjourned with the announcement that the next regular meeting date will be November 15th, 2010, at 7:00 P.M. in the high school
