St. Paul, MN -- Haely Leiding of Fillmore County, placed 10th overall in the second year of the Minnesota 4-H Dairy Showcase. Her sister, Kayla Leiding, placed 14th overall in the second year of the Minnesota 4-H Dairy Schowcase. Twenty-five youth were recognized during the event held Sunday, August 29th, during the Minnesota State Fair. Haely and Kayla are the daughters of Todd and Stacy Leiding of Fountain.

Being active in the 4-H dairy project has helped Haely not only promote the dairy industry, but work with younger members. She is involved with the county junior dairy projects including quiz bowl and dairy judging. She says the most important skill she has learned is having a good work ethic. She received a $500 cash award sponsored by Olmsted County ADA, and the Rice County 4-H Boosters.

Being active in the 4-H dairy project has helped Kayla not only promote the dairy industry, but work with younger members. "Within the 4-H dairy project I have learned how to be responsible and get my work done efficiently and how important it is to get it done right and on time." She received a $400 cash award sponsored by the Minnesota Guernsey Association, Minnesota Milking Shorthorn Association and the K5 Ranch.

The Showcase was developed to recognize the involvement, dedication, and passion of Minnesota's 4-H dairy youth. Selected youth received a monetary award for their accomplishments. State Fair 4-H dairy exhibitors who received a blue or purple ribbon in their respective class were eligible to apply for the Showcase. A scorecard determined the Top 25 and consisted of an online Leadership Profile.

The Profile included the individual's project leadership, dairy-related activities, and community involvement. Bonus points were given to individuals receiving champion and reserve champion honors.

In the program's second year, generous sponsors provided just over $16,000 to be dispersed to youth. Twenty percent of funds raised were set aside for 4-H animal science education purposes. The Minnesota 4-H Dairy Showcase is a joint effort between the Minnesota Livestock Breeders Association and the Minnesota 4-H Dairy Project Development Committee.
