Mr. Schimming, 68, of rural Canton, a retired Navy commander, died Friday (July 20, 2001) at his home.

He was born May 25, 1933, in Decorah, Iowa, and graduated from high school and college. He joined the Navy in 1951. On May 12, 1955, he married Phyllis Remke in Decorah. He and his wife had lived in Canton since his retirement from the Navy in 1973.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Norman of Suffolk Va., Michael of McHenry, Ill., and John of Necedah, Wis.; and six grandchildren.

The funeral for John G. Schimming was Tuesday (July 24, 2001) at Assumption Catholic Church in Canton, with the Rev. Steve Peterson officiating. Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery in Canton with military graveside rites. Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony was in charge of arrangements.
