Habitat for Humanity Quilts

We wanted to let you know about a wonderful project that is currently taking place in our area. In an amazing display of friendship and support, two beautiful quilts are being made for two families who will soon be moving into homes they will purchase from Habitat for Humanity.

The first quilt will be presented to Chad and Annie Bybee and their children, Lenora, Robert, and Uriah, at the dedication of their new home in December. The second quilt will go to the Nick Corcoran/Danielle Dailey family sometime in the spring of 2011 after the second side of the duplex is completed. The couple also has three children: Brennan, Dominick, and Destiny. Both families were in need of a simple, decent and affordable home for their families and were selected earlier this year to partner with Habitat and the Rushford area community to build and purchase their homes.

Habitat is a non-profit, ecumenical, grassroots, Christian organization, dedicated to eliminating poverty housing. The core tenants of Habitat are straight-forward; Habitat does not give homes away. To qualify, families must live in substandard housing, earn between 30 to 60 percent of the median income of our counties, contribute over 300 hours of work on their home and then purchase the home through a no-interest loan. This model has a proven track record. Throughout the country Habitat families report improved education and skills, a greater feeling of civic responsibility and respect for community, a greater sense of pride in accomplishments and greater financial independence-important steps in breaking the cycle of poverty.

Community members are being asked to sign a quilt square and make a donation to Habitat which will help complete the cost of construction on the two homes in Rushford. Signatures will be embroidered onto the squares and then made into the quilts which will be given to each family at the time of the dedication of their home. Besides raising much needed money, the quilts will be symbols to the families of the involvement, care and support of their communities.

Habitat relies on the generosity of our friends and neighbors to continue our mission. We hope that you will want to be a part of this wonderful gift. We are asking you to consider making a donation to the quilt project. The name of your business/group will be embroidered on the quilts for both families and would serve as a reminder of your important work and your dedication to the community.

Please make checks payable to Habitat for Humanity. Donations are needed by November 19, 2010.
