Andrew Batstone is new to southeastern Minnesota, but he is no stranger to the cold winters and crazy climate of the north. Batstone was born and raised in Ontario, Canada, and he graduated from the University of North Dakota with a degree in accounting.
It was during his third year of college that Batstone decided accounting was the direction he wanted to take in life. After graduating in 1989, he worked at an accounting firm in the Twin Cities area. He also lived in Madison, Wisconsin, for two years. After getting married to Bonnie Handmacher, he moved to Lanesboro. Handmacher owns the O'Leary's Bed and Breakfast in Lanesboro and works at the Mayo Clinic.
Batstone jumped at the opportunity to take over Vicky Tribon's accounting business in Harmony, feeling that it was a great fit. He took over Tribon's clients and is working full time in Harmony. Tribon will continue working part time for a while.
Accounting was the right path for Batstone. "I like the intangibles of it," he said. "That's the fun stuff."
Batstone has really enjoyed the town of Harmony since starting Batstone Accounting. "I love it here," he said. "It has a vibrant business community."
Batstone's duties include much more than doing tax returns for people. The accounting business also does work for other businesses. Batstone explained they do bookkeeping work, payroll, business consulting, planning and analysis.
"We do a lot of financial analysis," said Batstone. "It helps businesses do better, and we can see the results. That's the piece that's fun."
Batstone gets a lot of satisfaction from helping businesses, such as large car dealerships, improve their finances and fix any problems they might be having, helping them to ultimately make more money.
"That's the stuff that's really satisfying," said Batstone. "If you dig down deep enough in the numbers, they'll tell you a story. It's what drives those numbers that matters."
Batstone also helps new businesses get their feet on the ground. His accounting analysis helps a new business owner with budgeting and financing, as well as seeing what issues may come up and how to prepare for them.
"That's fun stuff as well," said Batstone. "Getting them off on the right foot, and helping them with what is really going to drive profits for that business."
Batstone is excited for his new adventure in Harmony. He is looking forward to working with his new clients, and planning on expanding a little as well. When things get settled in, he plans on doing some deer hunting and getting to know the area a little more.
Batstone Accounting is located right off Main Avenue in Harmony.
