GMLOK, Chatfield, and host school FCLMC were 3 of 11 wrestling teams to descend upon Harmony on Dec. 18 for an early season mat extravaganza. Defending Three Rivers champ and Section 1AA second place finisher, PEM was the school to walk away with the win, securing 235.5 points. Decorah, Iowa, finished second with 192.5. Chatfield came in third, FCLMC 7th, and GMLOK 10th.
Sophomore Lucas Roe was GMLOK's only winner. He took the 152-pound crown. At 103, 8th grader Blake Olson finished second. Wyatt Richardson took 3rd at 171 and Casey Struckman 6th at 160. Bill Simpkin's squad has some injuries. They're short at many weights and waiting to get back to full strength.
For FCLMC, senior Darren Hill (215) and freshman Thomas Henry (140) were top finishers. Each wrestled smartly to make the finals, ultimately taking second. Monty Holm (145), Niko Anderson (160), and Logan Whitehill (171) all took 5th. Connor Hanson (112) and Gabe Decker (125) took 6th. Joe Cullen's club is young, with an average age below 9th grade.
Chatfield, taking 3rd, was the most successful of the Fillmore County schools. Senior and state qualifier Juan Gomez won 189. Freshman Alex Haffner (119), senior Jacob Pierce (130), senior Zach Curry (145), and freshman Cody Bly (152) all took second at their respective weights. Harvey Friederichs (112) and A.J. Riley (124) placed 3rd. Cody Wrebel finished 4th at 285. Chatfield has good numbers and looks to be very competitive in the Three Rivers Conference again.
