Managing director resigns from Commonweal

LANESBORO, MN - The Board of Directors of the Commonweal Theatre, located in historic downtown Lanesboro, has received a letter of resignation from its Managing Director, Eric Bunge, at the request of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors.
As the Commonweal continues to build on a trend of record-setting numbers for attendance and donations, the leadership of the theatre company has been working to resolve differences in the strategic direction and focus for the company. After careful consideration, the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors has determined the organization will be best served by a single leader focused on producing the highest quality art and entertainment possible while also strengthening the Commonweal's long-term sustainability. Artistic Director Hal Cropp has been named as interim Executive Director.
The Commonweal Board of Directors honors Eric Bunge for his service to the company and the community. Immediate past president of Commonweal's Board of Directors, David Ruen, says, "We are all so appreciative of Eric's vision, passion and energy which, in large part, drove Commonweal to its present form." During Mr. Bunge's tenure, the Commonweal has produced more than 100 plays and has earned local, national, and international acclaim for its programming. In 2007, the theatre company took up residence in the new Commonweal Theatre, a state-of-the-art facility housing both performance space and administrative offices. Attendance at the theatre has grown steadily from 15,000 to almost 21,000 patrons over the past five years and a record number of mainstage performances were sold-out in 2010.
"I am proud of my work, vision and leadership service to the Commonweal Theatre Company, its patrons and its board of directors over the years," states Eric Bunge. "I am confident my vision, leadership and efforts have put the Commonweal in the most positive position possible to meet the demands and challenges of the future. This is a milestone that I had anticipated for some time and a necessary step for Commonweal to become an institution that outlives any one person's contribution or service."
The Commonweal is a non-profit, professional theatre company in Lanesboro, MN dedicated to enriching the common good through actor-based storytelling which is both transcendent and relevant. Run by an ensemble of artist/administrators, the Commonweal is committed to the core values of artistic excellence, collaboration, community, diversity, sustainability, and education, while making live theatre accessible to as many as possible.
