Real Bites of Cafe Magpie

For those of you who live in Harmony, Mabel and Canton, a trip to Decorah probably a pretty common thing.

With me living up in Fountain, the big city I will typically run to for things you can't find in Fillmore County is usually Rochester.

Well, I had the unusual fortune of paying a visit to Decorah for a meeting. Following my meeting, hunger pains kicked in and decided to stop by a place called Cafe Magpie -- just one block off of Water Street (the main drag of downtown Decorah).

I wasn't terribly hungry. I just wanted something to fill me and be on my way.

When I placed my order, I went with the daily special, a perfect choice. This was a plate of Creamy Dill Pasta, and my drink of choice was an iced coffee mocha.

I love eating food I've never had before (as long as it tastes good).

Let me tell you, this was exceptional.

The Creamy Dill Pasta was the right amount of food, so I didn't have to loosen my belt. The iced coffee mocha was absolutely the BEST I've ever had. Seriously, their iced coffee mocha beats the pants off of any similar beverage I've had elsewhere. And, I think it was the right amount of caffeine. What is the right amount?

The other interesting observation I made about Cafe Magpie was simply watching the people. I'm a people watcher, and I always have been.

There people conducting business meetings, working on laptops, reading books and magazines, and simply enjoying a meal and some conversation with a friend or two.

I think Cafe Magpie is a fantastic place. If you are planning on doing some shopping in that direction, it's worth stopping by for your caffeine fix.

I feel fortunate to live in an area where we have absolutely no corporate-owned restaurants. Every restaurant in our area is family owned and operated. Every dining establishment in the area provides something unique from the ambiance to the tasty bites that keep us coming back for more. We have a great selection of restaurants right here in our own backyard, and I plan on sharing my dining experiences from one town to the next.

Look for this feature every week in the Fillmore County Journal, along with online under the Real Bites section.
