While the R-P school board remains nearly the same as in 2010, there is one new member. Angela Colbenson, a first-time challenger in the district, won the seat, receiving the second highest number of votes in the November election. While the Semcac financial director highlighted quality education as her main focus during the campaign, both funding for rural schools and the state of the current facilities were also top issues.
A bit of organizational housekeeping was also on the Monday, January 24th board agenda. Following the oath of office for Colbenson and re-elected members Daniel Munson and Greg Smith, the board elected officers for the year.
Kathie Ingram has been elected chairman of the board. Munson will be vice-chairman. Beth Stanford take over the role of treasurer and John Nitecki will serve as clerk.
Board meetings will continue to be held the third Monday of each month in the high school biology room, unless otherwise noted by the district. The February meeting will be moved back to the 28th, the fourth Monday, to accommodate the Presidents' Day holiday. Additionally, meetings will now be scheduled for 6:00 pm.
In other notable news, the Facilities Task Force for the New School Initiative saw 24 attendees at the first meeting, January 20th. Following a tour of the middle school building, the group discussed the responsibilities of the task force itself. A second meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, February 3rd, at 6:30 pm. at the elementary/high school facility.
A much smaller group turned out for the first open forum regarding a possible Flexible Learning Calendar. The effort's interests include an earlier beginning to the school year, approximately two weeks prior to Labor Day. The district feels this would provide both teachers and students quality instruction time before statewide accountability assessments. Two additional forums are scheduled: Thursday, January 27th, and Monday, February 7th, both in the high school theater.
The district's charter school application has been denied by the Minnesota Department of Education for failure to meet criteria and/or expectations. The district plans to complete the document and resubmit the application prior to the February 16th deadline. As a result of this denial, however, R-P will not serve as the authorizer for the Ridgeway School for the 2011-2012 school year.
The district has received confirmation from their insurance provider that a portion of damages to the greenhouse will be covered. The structure saw damages following significant snowfall in December. Projected cost for the repairs total $4,479 of which $1,979 will be paid following a $2,500 deductible.

Emily Frick and Fred Scaife for a job well done representing the district in the Dorian Festival Choir. The duo were among 1250 students from 300 schools, in the choir.
Again, the next regularly scheduled meeting is Monday, February 28th, at 6:00 pm, in the high school biology room. The public is encouraged to attend.
