Jerome P. Forde, 78, of Mabel, a longtime area farmer, died October 25, 2002 at Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis.

He was born June 20, 1924, in Newburg Township, Fillmore County to Alvin, Sr., and Minnie (Holland) Forde. He attended Mabel-area schools. From November 1945 to February 1947, he served in the Army as a military policeman in Germany. On Feb. 21, 1948, he married Vina Mae Gilbertson in Austin. A farmer in the Mabel area most of his life, he formerly worked for Roverud Construction, Mabel Cooperative and Southern States Feed in Williamsburg, Va. He was a former member of Garness Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Mabel and a former member of the Mabel Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of Mabel First Lutheran Church, Joseph B. Lund American Legion Post 299 and Kittleson Onsgard Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5769. He enjoyed music, dancing, driving and politics.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Allan (Rita) of Mabel and Paul (Roslyn) of Fountain; a daughter, Sharon (Tom) Armstrong of San Antonio, Texas; three grandchildren; and two brothers, Arthur (Katherine) of La Crosse and Alvin Jr. (Julia) of Sparta, Wis. He was preceded in death by a grandson and a sister.

The funeral was held Oct. 29, 2002 at First Lutheran Church in Mabel, with the Rev. Stephen Fiksdal officiating. Burial was in Mabel Lutheran Cemetery, with military rites by the Mabel Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel was in charge of arrangements.
