Congratulations Lanesboro Voters!
The citizens of Lanesboro should be proud of the community's results during the 2002 election campaign. First, voters had several choices for Mayor and City Council positions. Second, a very successful Political Forum for State, County, and City candidates was sponsored by the Lanesboro Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce to introduce the candidates. Third, candidates and volunteer workers went door to door to meet and inform voters of the issues at hand. Finally, a tremendous voter turnout of 82% produced results reflective of the community's wishes for local leadership.
The local election process wasn't without differences of opinion and dented feelings. But as I watched losing candidates concede defeat on television Tuesday night, a common theme rung out. Most seemed to be saying, "We gave it our best, it's time to move on to new issues, and we need to support elected officials for the good of the public". Newly elected officials should remember that those who voted for us have high expectations about us making a meaningful change for their benefit. Additionally, let's not forget that we have a big job to do for the 40% or more that voted against some candidates. Their concerns and issues needs to be part of our plan for better local government in 2003 and beyond.
We won't all agree on the election results, but let us be thankful that as Americans we have the freedom to carry out an election process of this type. Thank you to all that campaigned, those who volunteered, and to all that voted. The next step is to work together for a better community.
